Kurdish residents, among them female and male members of the "Popular Protection Units" (YPG), stand at the empty streets in the majority-Kurdish Sheikh Maksoud district as they refuse to leave their homes after Syrian opposition fighters entered into the Kurdish area forcing thousands of civilians to flee into safe areas outside of Aleppo City. Since then, the neighborhood is being bombed and shelled by Syrian forces in its attempt to sweep out the opposition fighters from the area.
