The account of the damage includes enlisted World Heritage sites, such as the historic town of Zabid, the Old City of Sana'a and the Old Walled City of Shibam, as well as the historical cities of Sa'dah and Hajjah submitted as nominees to be under protection of UNESCO.

Cultural sites in Yemen, symbols of millennial history, have been severely affected by the heavy fighting and intense bombardments in regions like Sa'dah, declared unilaterally "a military zone" and cities like Taiz and Aden where Houthi insurgents aligned with the national army battle against the southern pro-independency militias and Islah party, the Muslim Brotherhood branch in Yemen backed by the Saudi-led coalition.

Last 12th of June 2015, a warplane aimed at a 2,500 year-old cultural heritage site in the Old City of Sana'a downing four residential tower-houses to the rubble and killing 4 of its residents. The incident caused an outrage and a red alert worldwide to call for the protection and preservation of the human lives and cultural treasures in Yemen, but the bombardments have not stopped yet.

The war in Yemen has raged since last 26th of March 2015 when a coalition of Arab states (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, Morocco, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain and Qatar) backed by the pro-Saudi coalition factions and western allies (United States, United Kingdom, Turkey, Palestinian Territories, Belgium, Libya and the Syrian armed opposition) led by Saudi Arabia launched a military campaign of bombardments over Yemen and against the Houthi insurgency aligned with the national army forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, that removed Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi from power.
